Picture day 192 – WANT

© Petra Stridfeldt

I have recently received an email from the FORMAT EXPOSURE that informed me that I had been  selected to exhibit pictures from my WANT project at the festival 2013..  FORMAT EXPOSURE is one of the UK’s leading International contemporary photography festival.

About WANT

“WANT represents society as a collective identity, one shaped by our roles as consumers. Balanced against a backdrop of environmental concerns, these images comment on how, in a consumer society, we can easily become defined by our possessions. In their manufacture, these possessions draw on the planet’s finite resources.

The work represents three key ideas: over-consumption, human denial and the concern about the way the planet is developing ecologically. By using wit to reflect these issues, the ‘portraits’ are intended to inspire thought rather preach or prescribe. The work reflects the artist’s concerns about the abuse of the environment and the guilt associated with living such a materialistic lifestyle.

The idea was conceived as a result of moving to England from Sweden, seeing the differences in environmental behaviour and the different views on over-consumption and global warming. Not that people are better or worse in different countries; rather, there are alternative ways of distancing ourselves from the negative impact that our acquisitive way of living has on the planet. By moving to a new country you become aware not only of the new culture and its associated behaviour, but also of the one you have left behind.

By forcing the objects of consumption into the realm of the absurd, influenced by Surrealist and Dadaist traditions, these comically monstrous portraits violate reason, adopting the conventions of clinical objectivity whilst being diametrically opposite in their intention and effect. It is easy to see them as grotesque, but aren’t we all depicted here?”

#7 reminds me of a character from Batman. Very cool, though, on its own.
